1911 newbie questions..

building 10mm 1911s since the late 80s, since he was in his late teens. Thru the years he has been written up as one of 2 custom gunsmiths that are attributed to being the ones to bring the 10mm back to life. What I am saying is that he has been building 10mm 1911s for over 30 years and there is no real absolute answer to that question. I have seen good and bad Wilson mags, as i have seen good and bad Chip McCormack mags along with most other mag makers. The best way to find a good mag is to look at the follower as that will tell you whether it is a good one or a junk mag. If it has a flat follower, don't buy it. It is has a rounded follower then it should be a good one. A follower like the one on the Star PD is the best you can get. Years ago the Consumers Guide to Handguns posted that the PD mag was the best and most reliable magazine on the market, because of the follower. This is the PD follower..

Compare that to this high dollar 10mm magazine. Look at the flat follower, JUNK!

This is a Mec Gar Magazine. Look at the follower. Not perfect but a lot better than most of the high dollar magazines on the market.

Before you buy a 38 Super or 10mm magazine, look at the follower. If it is flat, don't buy it. If it has a rounded follower like the ones shown in the PD mag or the Mec Gar magazine, buy it. Just because a magazine costs $35 to $50 and had a well known name on the package doesn't make it the best. Forget the name brand. Look at the follower.

I have had terrible experiences with both Wilson and Chip McCormick mags in this particular gun. The RIA mags feed smooth as silk. Haven't tried Colt's.

There's a thread on this very topic from about a year (or 2) ago on this forum in which GNR drops science on how follower shape is critical in getting 10mm 1911 mags to feed correctly.

Concave - "U" - bad. Convex - upside-down -"U" - good.

Ordered 4 Mecgar Mags with the rounded follower. They were even listed as Mecgar RIA 10mm.

Probably save me a lot of headache with mags.
