Reeder Custom Guns - Not as interesting as Gary's trip to Africa but...

A very good friend of mine now lives alone and she is concerned about the slim possibility of someone breaking into her house. Her hand and wrist strength is quite weak. I think she would be best with a semiauto handgun but I've found none that she could work the slide. I've tried a Taurus .380 as well as a Springfield 9mm. Full size semiauto's are completely out of the question. For the present I've loaned her a .38 revolver but I'd really like her to have more than 5 rounds available for her...

We're open to any suggestions anyone can have. She does want something she can carry in her purse when away from her home.

What I could supply for her is a Keltec 9mm that has a 12 round magazine. She may not be able to work the slide but I could load it for her and leave a round in the chamber.

Misses. My wife has issues working the slides on many smaller autos. I feel she is much better served by her revolvers that she feels comfortable with. Usually she totes a M60 S&W Gary prissed up. House gun is a S&W 3” .41 Mag. but “only” 6-shots. Both have HKS speedloaders close by, no fumbling for reloads.

Heck I even keep an old stainless Rossi .38 in the farm truck. Sometimes I carry my SP101 .357 too (loaded with .38’s - hey don’t judge me). I don’t feel real under gunned with my 1920’s Pocket Positive .32 NP dropped in a pocket, 6-shot.

My most common personal carry guns rotate from a 6-shot Kahr .380, 9mm, or .45 and a Glock 10-shot G30s. The important thing is to “carry”, be trained and confident.

I want one of those. I've got a Makarov and Ruger LCP II in 380.

The Makarov I got for $100. It appears new and came with two mags. Shoots better than it has a right to.

But, since handling one of the S&Ws, I feel I need to add one. Must resist....

Get her a couple speedloaders for it.
Spend some time working with her using SNAP CAPS and teach her how to reload it.
Work on dryfiring .. making the shot count. That is much better than relying on multiple shots.

with working the controls on a pistol, DON'T get her something that she will have to work under STRESS. A revolver that she can handle well may ONLY have 5 or 6 shots, but can she handle it under stress. Most shootings do not require more than 3 or 4 shots. I don't remember the actual FBI statistics but I do remember is was not very many shots. A revolver she can handle and carry as well as fire and hit what she is aiming at is far better than a wonder 9 that she can't effectively operate. Just my opinion in the for what it's worth department.

She hasn't been a shooter very long. What she has now is a .38 snub nose. Only five rounds but, like you say, usually the first 3 to 5 rounds will either finish the fight or cause the bad guy to vacate the premises...

if you can find one, not made currently . it is a nice sized 380 and has a tip up barre.[ like the little beretta model 21 bobcat in 22 lr and 25 acp or the beretta tomcat in 32 ].

you dont ever have to work the slide. and the darn thing is superbly accurate and mine is utterly reliable
