Reeder Custom Guns - Shooting into a pile of rag with the 480 Achilles

My neighbor has started learning to powder-coat bullets. He asked if I had any he could practice on. I gave him a handful of bullets for the 480 Achilles and today he made some in John Deere green.

I loaded one with about 2 gr. of Bullseye... then laid a pile of rags on the desk with some boards at the end in case I missed or misjudged the powder charge.

Then I fired the 480 Achilles into the rags. The T-shirt that was first stopped the bullet.

The bullet was smoked up a bit .. charge was too light to expand the base.

is no smoke. They are literally "plastic" jacketed. I overheated some in an oven and all the lead leaked out! The bullets looked good but were like locust shells! LOL

Lack of smoke and exposure to lead vapors are key benefits to shooting painted bullets. There is something also that they self lubricate (more correctly do not require it) and somehow, I can't explain it myself, seem to take rifling better than non-painted bullets. I'd say to the tune of some 500 fps more with rifle bullets?! It's worth the trouble for advanced applications, or desiring cleaner shooting and no smoke. Many guys are all hung up on appearances, it's truly how well it shoots, and most do wonderfully painted. Even the ugly ones.

I've had great success with them. Even with elevated rifle velocities. I particularly like them in my carbines that fire pistol cartridges.

I will not be setting up to do it myself. I prefer the old school lubed bullets when I am shooting cast. I won't argue they are better. I just like them better. They do everything I want.

Besides, my generation that grew up chewing on lead-painted baby cribs and breathing lead gas fumes helped win WW2, invented the computer and went to the moon.

Basically the same treatment a rimfire heel bullet gets, only better. It is a bit messy and stinky but I kind of like it.

for me you cannot improve upon the Keith SWC with its nice wide grease groove. Especially in .44 and .45 calibers. I don't have any hesitation staking my life on them.
