Reeder Custom Guns - Hunting in the snow

Being a Louisiana native, I have never had the opportunity to hunt in the snow. The few times it snowed during season I had other duties to attend. I am about to remedy that. I am off until Friday so Pigs better watch out. I’m going to go out with my rifle for a walk and look for tracks then follow them! This afternoon I’m going to put out some corn in the usual areas and if I find sign some will go there. Dee and I saw a large sounder yesterday just 2 miles from here on a place I don’t yet have permission hunt. I heard the owner hates them so I’m stopping by today as well to have a conversation about permission.

I’ll cary a 308 waking and scouting, then if I get them coming to bait I’ll use my bisley 44 special. Hope to have a story to tell later this week!

While it's great for tracking, I still don't care for snow. I tracked a really good mule deer in New Mexico that my wife ended up shooting,we were both frozen by the time we got him out. My son and I had to crawl about 600 yds in the snow to get within range of a mule deer in TX we were soaked,by the time we got him out had the beginning stages of hypothermia. Just be careful everything is more difficult in the snow. Not trying to be a downer, hope you bust a pig, good luck

Although I will hunt on foot today, Any recovery will be with an ATV.
However I didn’t think about getting wet. I do have clothes for that too, I’ll make sure to wear them.

Change them when your feet start to feel cold.

Wherever you need if you are on dirt. I have one of those racks that fit in the receiver hitch. Lifting a big hog to that level is a lot easier than going in the back of a truck.
But a small pig under 100 or even 40Lbs is better eating.

I will shoot any and all of them. We have pig problems. But for eating, I want a small one, that is calm until it’s dead, and then I will clean it myself thank you very much.

Behind the ear for the most part and between the shoulders if one is facing me. You might be able to pull a double. I have with rifles and onc with my 454. I put corn in small piles to spread out a sounder. Apple cornreally draws em. Roasted soybeans are superb but expensive.

My nephew has killed 5 since October with precision placed head shots with a single shot .22 rifle. I shot 3 at a friends place with my 41 magnum. 3 weeks ago. Walked behind his house to a feeder and I counted 8. Picked out a big sow shot her through the heart. Calamity ensued. 3 small ones came back for the corn. They were about 20 feet from me then. I saw they where lined up so I shot 2 with one shot they were about 20lbs apiece on the hoof. I was just trying to get rid of pigs but got some good eats from that trip as well.

I love hunting in snow. One of the best methods to hunt is to follow a set of tracks. I will follow a set of tracks and glass with a set of small binoculars. Walk about fifty feet at a time and glass every thing that looks odd. The black bodies stand out in the snow.

I GOT OLD(ER)

Last week I decided to walk in knee deep snow during my lunch hour. Needless to say my muscles tightened up and viola, I have a bout of sciatica.

It is now starting to subside.

I still think I can do at 55 what I did at 25.

from Idaho across Lolo pass and across I-90. They ran him with 3 teams of dogs for over 50 miles. He finally treed somewhere up 9 mile valley. The only one with a tag that year was one of the guys 12 year old daughter. They built a fire and camped under the treed cat while her father went into town and got her out of school and dressed. after an hours hike she arrived at the tree and promptly shot the huge tom in the heart with a 22lr. Later on a scale, the cat weighed 207 pounds.

hunt I can imagine. We have to keep up with the dogs in 2 to 3 feet of snow and normally the cat will go uphill. And when he decides to go up a tree to catch his breath, and when we get close enough to him to get a shot he comes down and takes off again, leaving tired dogs and even more tired hunters behind. It is a rough hunt. Both my and Colleen's cat were taken with the 7 GNR. Colleen's cat is shown in the tree. Kase's piggie was taken with his Dan Wesson 445 Super Mag.

AND UPHILL.THE TWO YOUNG COWBOYS I WAS WITH JUST KEPT TELLING ME TO LIE DOWN IN THE SNOW AND REST. I DID.

I got tired trying to get up that hill. In the deep snow I just leaned back and rested. The snow made a perfect seat for me to just lean back and sit. But it was by far the hardest hunt I can remember. Way too hard for a 50 year old man. It quickly reminded me that I wasn't 30 anymore.
When we got out of the truck and the dogs wre heading straight uphill after the cat. The guide said "hurry up, let's catch up with the dogs". My mind said "sure let's do it". My body said "what the hell are you thinking?".

I have a home near Flagstaff. Would be interesting to know if that size of cat is running around our backyards.
