Reeder Custom Guns - Driving 4WD in snow...

Not something I do very much. On ice, literally a sheet of ice, 4WD sucks! I scare myself frequently. AWD function is pure magic, awesome. We have an old (the Blue Beast) 2004 Expedition Bauer with 4WD and AWD. If you begin to slide give it some throttle and it straightens out. Not a normal reaction coming down an ice covered hill and sliding but it seems to work.

4WD-H in snow pulls all 4 all the time? Is that better to use? AWD I seem to need to goose it to regain steering some. Mainly while planning over deeper snow to realign into established ruts. We have a Jeep Cherokee I’ve never driven in the snow, nice little straight 6. It says on snow you “can” use “part time 4WD” but not I’d clear pavement is involved. Confusing. It says part time is for snow or off road only. It recommends 4WD-full for most on road slippery conditions.

Any of you snow Nutt’s got any insight? I’m slip sliding away.

Solid ice! Makes a Arky’s go crazy! The last attempt at the three roads going into the water treatment plant. BEFORE the 8” of snow today.

4WD helps but too many people think it is a miracle on wheels.

But stopping is another matter. Seriously though AWD will go up a hill covered with ice that you couldn’t stand on. Let off the gas though and it can slide, it has to be pulling to go straight.

Yes very tough driving. I have to drive two miles on and icy dirt road to get to my home. And in the White Mountains that’s just what it is. Mountain’s.
So everyone has big 4 wheel drive PU’’s and know how to drive them. Including me. But yes, it is a challenge on ice. Also we have ice racing here Also. Will send pictures to you . Pete

If you have the traction button like the newer models have...turn it on....run 4h until you have to crawl. Swap to 4low.
Most of the time your 4 low locks all four into pulling.

4high will be limited slip on each axle

There are codes in the glove box. Rpo code. I forget which number is which...but you can Google it.
I think gt4 is positive trac and g80 is 373 gears

Try to stay where there is snow also...not alot you can do for sheet ice...except be easy

passenger van Colleen bought to haul around her pups. We very very seldom have ice storms here. Mostly just heavy snow. but when the graders and snow plows grade off the snow that leaves a slick patch of ice. I just put my Expedition in 4X4 and go slow and stay away from cars in front of me. Driving on the packed snow (ice) is no problem. Stopping is. Just take it easy, no abrupt turns and no quick stopping. We have some very steep hills here and I just put it in 4X4 lo and ease down the hills at maybe 15 mph. Let the engine hold the truck back and don't touch the brake. It has worked for us for the 27 years we have been out here.

It depends which transfer case it has. Select Trac (which it sounds like you have), has 2WD; 4WD high full-time: sends power to all wheels, you can use it anytime (even on dry roads) the transfer case provides the slippage; 4WD high part-time: locks both front and rear driveshafts so you need some slippage at the wheels or you will tear up the transfer case; 4WD low part-time for crawling. Command Trac has 2WD, 4WD high and 4WD low (4WD part-time only).

is stellar, just keep on the gas and it goes, no worries. It does have 4H and 4L but I have to get the manual out to mess with that. The little Jeep scares me. I paid $3500 for it and it's clean as a pin, little old lady's truck. Bought it for my daughter. If anything drastic happens to it mechanically it's a parts rig. But from what I've read you can run 4-full time on any road any time, that's safe. Not only do I have me to worry about I have two women and a 21 yr. old that is smarter than me (says he), it's risky to let too many mess with.

I am the designated driver for a day or three. 10" of show here is like 10 feet at Gary's. Arky's go nuts.

hard pack snow down shift. even if it's an automatic if you use the brake you have no wheel drive. And you will slide and do donuts. weeeeee!

on the crust on the side of the road. you can get a little more traction then on the slick Ice and hard pack

but it needs new sneakers. So I drove my wife’s truck. It does an awesome job. [image]

I was going to hook it up to a trailer and walked to the back. It didn't even have a hole in the bumper for a ball! It was an old retired farmer's street PU. I'll have to order a receiver hitch IF I ever want to haul anything. I have the old Farm Ford for that or Momma's Expedition.

Four-wheel-drive only helps you very little on slick roads. It only helps to steer and accelerate doesn’t help you at all to stop. Buy a Quality set of small link tire chains and some spider tensioner’s. Takes about 10 minutes to put them on and will help you a whole lot. Front axle works best for me.
