It depends which transfer case it has. Select Trac (which it sounds like you have), has 2WD; 4WD high full-time: sends power to all wheels, you can use it anytime (even on dry roads) the transfer case provides the slippage; 4WD high part-time: locks both front and rear driveshafts so you need some slippage at the wheels or you will tear up the transfer case; 4WD low part-time for crawling. Command Trac has 2WD, 4WD high and 4WD low (4WD part-time only).
