What is the general consensus regarding the Barnes XPB bullets for hunting deer and elk sized game? .44 magnum and .454 Casull in particular.
I personally don't like any Barnes bullets

In our shop we get more complaints on them than any other bullet. They open up if they hit a big heavy bone but otherwise they zip right thru like an ice pick. Lots of wounded and lost animals with them. My opinion, for what it's worth.
I agree, plus they were NOT very accurate either

I love them ,if you get stupid and push them to fast yes full metal jacket. I have shot them in many calibers ,sucksess with all,the realoadin process is pretty interesting,,grain at a time, my 308 encore and my 788 remington with carbine barrel will make clover or smaller at 100 yds. 180 in my 300 win mag is a hammer . I live in the TX panhandle,in drought or bad fire years we get NM and oka elk in the corn . I shot a pretty good bull with a 308 ,hit him in the hip as him went in the corn, bullet shattered the femur, cut femaral artery on left side,cut artery on right side and stuck in hide in off side, I've got a bunch of recovered bullets I'll try to post pics. I've had great success with them, not trying to stir up crap but they have really worked for us

I have had great success with barnes for 30 years. Africa to Alaska to the lower 48. I have also had great success with nosler with big calibers bigger than 308. I love Hornaday and sierra. Only two bullets ever disappointed by is the xtp in the 454 casual and a nosler bt in 338. Both animals got killed but the bullets in both cases ths bullets didn't get good penetration. Both instances the bullets blew up in the shoulder. Maybe just circumstance. Not sure. But almost all bullets to me have worked very well

It punched a hole in a big mule deer just like a field tip on a arrow would. Spend the next 4 days looking for it and never found it. Never again, give me Nosler Partitions or Accubonds.

It is an unfortunate fact that I now live in CA, so shooting non-lead bullets for hunting has been something I’ve had to live with.
I’ve worked up good, accurate loads with the XPB in a SBH that I hunt with. I’ve killed deer with them, placed in the right spot the deer does die. But they do not hit hard like a Wide Flat Nose cast lead bullet, and the XPB bullets don’t seem to transfer the energy as much as they zip through.
When I hunt back home in Ohio, I shoot a 260 LBT WFNGC bullet that I cast myself. I would shoot any deer or elk with that bullet over the XPB if I had a choice.
I like them, they work
