Sorry it took me a while to get back. Dealing with no electricity and other stuff. To answer some questions.
What will I do with the pigs caught in a trap. They will be shot with a 22 lr and cleaned and consumed by my family, friends neighbors, coworkers and anyone else that wants them. There are different groups in Louisiana that are formed just to distribute pigs that are trapped or shot. I am just learning about them and not sure exactly how they work as I can generally make a call or 2 and they are gone. I am not interested in catching 100s of hogs just some here and there.

Live traps are what I will use. To be Legal in Louisiana they must have an opening in the top where a dear or bear can escape. Pigs can too sometimes They can be made nanny different ways but the best part is in this weather you can check them in the morning and have some time to find someone to take them. In the hot summer they will die in short while without water so like any other trap should be ran daily.

I fir trapped as a boy and was taught to run traps daily, first thing in the morning. For me I was normally through before daylight. I don’t want any animal to suffer. So I have not used leg hold traps or snares for 30 years and don’t plan to ever again.

People who do not live in places with pigs normally do not understand. Landowners hate them for a reason. They are destructive. They are here now and we will never be rid of all of them. I will make the best of it and use them for my own recreational and food needs. This past season while helping a friend track a deer we walked up on a BIG BOAR. Due to expecting a long drag out I packed light. One Ruger bearcat. I felt very under gunned.

Actually I don't think it costs anything but you have to sign for it. T-posts and cattle panels, and bait, are provided by the individual. The Game & Fish want to get a count too but the hogs are yours to do whatever. That's what Alan's guys told me.

Some times of the year in AR you could not carry a centerfire gun in the woods. So a .22 WMR was the most powerful technically allowed. That was before concealed or constitutional carry of course. They could say you were poaching with a more powerful arm. Interestingly anything under .22 cal. (.17's and .204 Ruger etc.) used to be illegal to use hunting at all! .22 rimfire or .22 centerfire etc. was the minimum. I'm not sure if they changed that yet.

Would bring them home to fatten up or kill at a later date. Castrate the young boars. I have heard that some people would relocate them to new areas but I personally have never met anyone interested in such foolishness.

It is now illegal to move a live wild hog from the woods even if you wish to pen it up for later slaughter. They are to be shot before removal of trap. UNLESS you have a certain permit that you purchase. Then you must also have a storage area they find suitable. You can bet there will be an inspection.

Can use some apple flavored corn that you might get on sale like a close out since deer season is over. Farm supply store put it on sale so I stock up cause I use it a lot. If they don’t come in to the corn soybeans are great but pricey. But hey if you got to get in good with someone,,,

What you got to do. Just move the trap and use something to wash the blood off.if it’s a cage style trap.

The exception of one important thing. You said you planned on shooting them. I won’t get into where to shoot or ammo. 22 is fine. I used mine for years.
But If you shoot even one in that trap you just screwed yourself and created a lot of work. Pigs have a very keen sense of smell.. they smell blood for weeks. You shoot a pig inside that trap, you have to move it and you have to wash it. That is, if you want to use that trap again, anytime soon. Otherwise it would have to set there several weeks and hopefully a rain or two would happen.
Best thing is to build or get you a cage for your truck, and haul em off to kill them. Definitely do not let friends or neighbors let their neighbors see this happening. You will get a call from someone... know what I mean?
I hunt an trap em year round. They are a big problem here in Texas.
Supposed to go to a ranch within a week for coyotes an hogs. Don’t get much more fun than that. Good luck to you.
Oh and it’s best to run the panel wire at a 45 degree about 1-1/2 wide at the top of the trap.. deer can get out and bears can, but pigs will have a much harder time, weather they jump or try the old method of going to a corner and one stands almost erect and allows the smaller ones to run up their back and escape.
You going to use a guillotine door ? Make it very heavy!! If it’s light and a sow is standing under it she will keep staying there till all the others escape. If it’s heavy enough she will move when it comes down with force. If you go with spring loaded doors use strong springs.
I prefer round traps like a horse corral.

And I definitely appreciate all advise. I really want to just catch a few to get in good graces with landowners and hopefully get a few spots to deer hunt.
Around hear landowners are not crazy about the doggers. Deer hunters with dogs have soured them. Not all but some have rutted up roads and fields. The night hunters with silencers and thermal scopes is 100percent legal but many of the older guys (land owners) see this as an opportunity to poach deer. No thankey they say. I know a lot of guys that do both and they are all stand up young gentlemen. They just suffer for the actions of a few idiots and some uninformed.

My plan is in action and a few contacts have cracked the door open for me. Myself and maybe one other at a time. Low impact on the property leaving the place better than we found it. Respect the landowners and the land/property.

And most importantly. Don’t act like you are doing them this big favor. They are not stupid. They know how much money they can lease their land for and have not for years. Be honest. “You have hogs. I want to kill hogs. I am willing to follow any standards you set”. This is what I did and now I have an opportunity to hunt 100 acres by trap or bow. If I can show him I will respect him and his, maybe it will develop more. Maybe not. We shall see.
