Reeder Custom Guns - What are the thought on metal for a HP pin in a mould?

I need to make some for this old .338 mould. Any .338 bullet is expensive so it will be a real treat to be able to make my own hunting .338 projectiles. It is a HP type mould with a hole for a pin to protrude. You can make different lengths or a stubby for no HP.

I can make pins from Aluminum, Copper, Brass, or steel. Each has it's own qualities of heat transfer and expansion. I'll probably make wood handles for them too. You pull the pin out after pouring a bullet around them, then drop the made slug.

Most old moulds used steel and I have made them from common nails before. Just a slight taper and polish on them to help slide out of the hot lead.

The pin is only 0.015" in diameter, but I can make it up to about 0.665" long penetrating the nose to about the driving band.

The old pins that survived some other moulds I have use wooden handles with a washer that limits, or makes pin placement consistent. You spin the handle to "lock" the location washer against the pin on the mould and under the lip on the mould bolt.

I'll need to tinker to replicate this on some level.

a hollow point. You are already punching a huge hole in the animal and breaking bones at the same time, why would you want to stop the penetration with a hollow point?

of sorts. The nose blows up with the base being more of a solid to continue to penetrate. It adds an effect to the cast bullet that is more than punching a clean .339" hole through it. A solid, flat nose or no, will certainly do that!

The pin depth can be adjusted to control that "nose blow" and how much of the bullet is in effect a solid base. It's lots of fun tinkering. You should be able to taylor performance to anything from 1500 fps to hopefully 2500 fps.

My plan is to manufacture projectiles I can shoot basically full power using polymer jacketing (powder coating) and extremely slow .50 BMG class powders.

Punch a ragged hole in a gas check and insert it in the mold in the front driving band. You get a copper driving band and a partition.

Then pour? I got some success with pure lead noses by doing that but it was a real trick. I worked a deal with Carl and bought that .375 mold that I have the special nose piece mould for. He was kind enough to sell to me and re-unite the set.

I think his is a 265 gr. mould. I did find the exact same mould in a 240 something grain, same nose, just shorter at base.

So that means the lead is about 65 thousandths thick at the nose. I really don't want to make the hole bigger. The Lyman 33889 I thought was a much older design for the .33 Winchester but no. It was designed in 1960 actually for the .338 Winchester Magnum. The Penta HP pin will be a tricky one! LOL

I got an ancient Lyman manual from Gary some time ago. Another Estate sale I figure. A man's name was on the book "J.M. Whitehall - Sept' 61. That was 2 years and 9 months BEFORE I was born some 58 yrs. ago (me). Back then the Lyman manual shows a top velocity just under 2000 fps using 50 grs. of 4350 powder. Today I have powder coating and even slower powders available to me. Can I get another 500 fps with no leading?! Will it be accurate? The fun begins!

Thanks Gary, you have no idea how some simple thing like an old manual (now held together with zip ties) and crusty old mould can send me on a truly pleasurable adventure. It keeps me out of trouble.

your special application using subsonic ammo and a suppressor? How is the clean up with powder coat in the can?

through a suppressor in 300 Blackout, 9 mm, 40 S&W, and 450 Bushmaster. No issues what so ever. Same as shooting jacketed.

You can hardly get that level of performance from over the counter bullets. I have some very interesting examples of some early homogeneous metal controlled fragmenting bullets for a specialty subsonic .50 BMG application. Possibly military, maybe some of JD Jones efforts. He was dabbling in that special military realm a while back.

Powder coated cast hp seem a no brainer for basement tinkers like us.

proper name, 300 Whisper. It was the 300 Whisper for 30 years before AAC blatantly stole it. I will never carry a 300 Blackout rifle in my shop. Unfortunately everyday people give AAC the credit for a stolen cartridge.
