Reeder Custom Guns - new and old

Maybe there is something wrong with me (my wife thinks so). I have been enjoying shooting and loading at both the new and the older ends of the spectrum. Toward one end is a Savage Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor. I know it is fun to bash this cartridge because it is new and the hype got pretty extreme (and some newbys make some wild claims about it). I have found it to be a nice shooting, well balanced round. It doesn't burn a lot of powder, kills deer quickly, very accurate, and very little recoil. I know I can buy a 6.5 that goes faster, burns more powder, etc. I don't really need that. This 6.5 does the job. My son, daughter in law, and I have killed a lot of deer in TX and AR with it over the last two years. All one shot kills (and quick) at ranges from 60 yards to 260 yards. Give it a try, you might like it. I am shocked I like it so much as I mostly hunt deer with a .45 Colt Backpacker or an old lever action in some old cartridge.

Toward the other and older end I am really enjoying a well used Savage 110 in 30-06 I traded for about 6 months ago. The stock had been cut off so I found a pretty nice stock on e-bay and glass bedded the action in it. I have been experimenting with 4451 powder and 168 grain bullets. It is grouping under an inch at 100. My only other 30-06 is a Rem. 742 (Waterboy knows that Arkansas law requires every redneck to own one). This bolt action Savage may turn out to be a favorite rifle.

Two ends of the spectrum but both fun to play around in.

Really good especially for a 150 gr pill. I loaded 54.4 hrs of W760 with a 150gr cor-Lokt that gave me a 1 hole group at 100 yds. A friend out shot me w/5 in one hole as I ruined things after 3 in a single hole. That load can take deer all day long. There’s lots of ways to make an 06 fun. Try running a 125 gr past 3K for an awesome coyote gun.

I vowed never too own one, just to plain and common. Yet due to unusual circumstances on a custom build, mostly in frustration, I had him build a .30-06. My gunsmith had a pile of literally brand new, unused, WWI Enfield four groove .30 cal. barrels he offered at a big discount. That's 1914-17 manufacture that he himself bought back in the 1950's and this was early 1980's. He had no exotica reamers in .30 cal. and we not keen on ordering or renting more for me. My other caliber options drove the price up 3x. So I, ME, ended up with a .30-06. I secretly vowed to do a re-bore if I ever needed more.

I have enjoyed playing with varied projectiles through it since then. 55 gr. Accelerators, heavy and light cast, light jacketed, heavy jacketed. It is popular for a reason and surprisingly powerful and accurate. It worked almost 120 yrs. ago and still does. It's just still plain and lacks exotica.

30-06 is fun H4350 and 180s or W760 was

Several years ago I ended up with a .30-06

H4350 not IMR works great in the 06 and 25.06
