Primer question

A few days back there was a discussion about swapping out Mag primers for regular and using rifle primers in pistol cases. Now I am aware of the higher pressures generated in rifles over pistols and the fact that the material is a bit thicker in the rifle and mag primers to handle the extra pressure. All of this was discussed
My question is I seem to have an excess of Large mag pistol primers and a shortage of large rifles primers. What are the risks I will run in using mag pistol primers in rifle cases. Say in a 243 win case, any big dangers other than a misfire from a deeper primer pocket?

Or a squib load that sticks a bullet in the barrel

Loading max charges, since pressure is reduced. I use the CCI primers and they are hard enough, I have not had problems no blown or heavy cratered type of associated with softer primers.

drop one grain in your load and you should be OK

The only real problem I see if you mag get a pierced primer. The rifle firing pin is usually several inches long powered by a larger heavier spring, whereas the pistol is a small firing pin (1/2") powered by a small spring, again about 1/2". So the rifle firing pin may give you a pierced primer.

Heavy loads in the 30-30 Trapper with Mag Pistol Primers ..

never gave an indication of pierced primers. Shot quite a few testing them .. running the 130 gr. Speer up past 2500 fps from the 16" barrel.

I don't know how they would work in other types of rifles but I know of more than a couple individuals who regularly use Mag Pistol Primers in the 30-30 Levergun.

I DID NOT SHOOT THIS GROUP! THIS WAS FIRED BY SOMEONE ELSE. VELOCITY IS 2750 FPS WITH THE SPEER 130 GR. HOT-COR BULLET. THE GUY WHO SHOT THIS SHOOTS GROUPS SIMILAR MORE THAN A FEW TIMES.

That is some serious shooting. Years ago I tinkered with various primers and the only thing I found in the end was that there were no hard and fast rules. I.E., every brand (manufacturer) had their own 'rules' and even those varied massively by lot...
