In the Lyman Black Powder Handbook there is a great article with early photographs of flared hollow base bullets in flight. This is a combination of powder charge and the actual bullet's design.
I also read a good article in "Leverguns" (old articles on the net) about the .41 Long Colt and how black powder burns so fast (even faster than Bullseye) that it really has an advantage bumping up bullets to fit an oversize bore. Much better than smokeless from what I read.
