Working on a sickly little HS D-101

Derringer. I've only had one before but always liked them. Basically a DA only two shot in either .22 LR or .22 WMR. It seems they are prone to some issues. Mainly for carrying a lot and shooting a little.

The selector is controlled by a little plastic pawl gear with a square cam in the middle. This rotates and moves 25% at a time to switch which barrel the firing pin aligns with. I found that there is an aftermarket aluminum pawl gear available for about $40. So they must be wear prone. The TWO issues I found with this specimen are a missing pawl actuator arm spring and a badly defaced firing pin. The firing pin is available as a replacement part but I'm going to try and re-face the old one to see if I can "fix" it. The little actuator spring I should be able to make from an old spring. The mounting is pretty slick. The spring is captive by a mortise that holds about half of it in place. The spring pushes the actuator arm to spin the pawl, in relation to the trigger being pulled. The grip cover plate installed will hold the spring firmly in place.

I'm gonna hit the tip of the firing pin face to see if that fixes it. Even with no spring it should serve as a single shot. IF the firing pin is long enough and the angle is good to fire off that rimfire.

That's an example why you don't dry fire a rimfire boys and girls.
