Reeder Custom Guns - We got to shoot a little today...

Doug re-checked his Africa guns. I finally got to shoot my custom .338 P14 Enfield. The muzzle brake is astonishing. I heard they were really good. Can you imagine a .338 Winchester Magnum shooting full house 250 gr. bullets and recoiling like a .243 Win.?! I'm not joking. You can shoot it if you don't believe me, it simply does not kick. Some spreadsheet wonder, it must have 100 tiny little holes in the brake, but it works by golly.

I remembered I had a spotting scope to use. Got it from this fellow Curt... Came in handy on the tripod.

We shot some hasty strings from the sticks to see how it was. I pulled a bit right with my .338 and Doug pulled left with his 9.3 Mauser. But not too bad for hasty field shooting at 100 meters.

We both are in love with the feel of the Ruger Hawkeye (Doug's is a .338 Win.). The stock proportions are not near as clubby as previous Ruger bolt rifles. They are really good fine rifles, I can't find fault with it. Other than it could use a brake or porting, it kicks! But for actual hunting you'd never even feel it.

Doug discovered he had to craw the stock a bit on higher magnification with his Blaser 9.3. A little too much. Better here than there. A 9.3X62 does bounce a bit. Not sure if he was shooting 250's or 286 gr.

I found my Enfield Custom has a little bit stubby bolt and with a generous throw I have to remember not to pinch my hand between the scope and the bolt handle. Little things you need to know, little quirks. It's best manipulated with an open palm. You may recall the really wild original dog-leg bolt the original military guns had.

of the tripod he may catch some grief from the airport folks. I have watched the really hassle a couple of guys using those top opening gun cases. They wanted to check the serial numbers at customs and the guys (both of them) had stuffed clothes, underwear and everything else they could find in there to pad the gun. The customs people got real nasty with them (this was 2 different people on 2 different occasions). The hunters had clothes and crap scattered all over the floor. The first hunter had waited in line for about 30 minutes and they made him gather up his clothes and go to the back of the line. When we got thru he was still waiting way back in the line. The other guy also caught hell from the customs people but he didn't have as much crap in the gun case. They still made him go to the end of the line. One of these guys was coming back from Australia and the other coming back from Africa.
Just a thought.

It locks and has rollers, made by SKB. He inserts the guns in soft cases inside the Golf case. You are right, it could become a pain if you got silly. I think he said he puts a coat in there in case it gets cold and makes good padding for extra. A coat and three guns in soft cases should make quick work.

He has a lockable case that goes in his other bag for the ammo. His trip here was with minimal gear. He's going on a fishing trip this weekend and he was doing a shake down run with his gear too.

I use most has a normal duffle for all your clothes but underneath that is a gun case. You just unzip the top section, fold it over and you have an opening for a small hard gun case. The one Doug has is advertised by SKB as a gun case. Another company also has one similar to that and it also holds 2 or 3 long guns. I don't know which one was causing the problems in the customs line.

It's made to pull apart and drop your Golf bag in there with the clubs. It is a bit of a trick to stick back together with nothing in it. Locks are on two sides. It has a hand hold cut-out and two poly rolling wheels.

The one you linked is obviously a modification of that, adapted for long guns.

I did not know SKB was so big into sports cases.

They made some good shotguns. I know they made the Weatherby auto and pumps a while back. I've had a couple of their OU shotguns and liked them. MY sport shooting friends discouraged me saying parts were difficult to find. They shoot enough to wear guns out, I never do. Not shotguns anyway.

I've always fancied their SXS M100 but the 12 ga. kicks too hard for me these days., except with special reduced loads. I load a 20 ga. load in a 12 hull. 3/4 oz. with 17-18 gr. Red Dot. By reducing shot sizes a couple numbers I regain my hit probability. But the small #8-#9 don't carry too far.

split horizontally. More of a big hollow hard case, you could fill with soft cased firearms. The access would be much more accessible and spacious. The handle and rollers are almost a necessity.

The hard case filled with soft cases, I like the concept. Not cheap at $300+. In the Golf Bag Case section.

the problems is the one I showed where it has a cap on the top that comes off and really to empty it you have to have 4 foot arms or just empty it on the floor. It does not split down the side, just remove the top cap. That one I showed in the Midway ad and was just a gun case with the handles and rollers too.

shotguns were rated the finest non custom shotguns on the market with the Winchester 101 right behind. I lusted after the silver receiver model 600 in 20 gauge for years before finally finding one. Colleen has a 20 gauge model 100 S/S.

We carried the SKB gun cases at our shop in Florida and when they had a special going on the SKB cases we were told by various salespeople that they were not the same company as the shotgun company.

Reminder nonetheless. I didn’t put a bunch of loose junk in with my guns just one jacket. I made sure I wasn’t first in line and had the top off the hard case and the soft cases unzipped and guns ready to pull out. It worked - I sure don’t want to be that guy who slows things down.
