I have a Sears and Roebuck that is Pre war. Looks just like
that one.

That were the same guns marked differently...
This one is Winchester Model 67
Made from 1934 to 1963. They were not required to use serial numbers until the 1968 Gun Control Act and these have no serial numbers.
The early rifles had fingers grooves in the stock, which werek were eliminated in late 1935. This gun does not have the finger grooves so it was made after '35.
In an effort to render Winchester products more visible when stored vertically on retailers' racks, an inlaid bronze stylized "W" logo was added to the trigger guard in March 1944. The logo was changed to red paint at an unknown later date. This gun does not have that so it was made before 1944.

It has always been one of my favorites
It was my first and most affordable "Pre-64" Winchester that I was able to obtain. There IS a big difference. I think the barrel is nominally a full 27" long. (How long before Jim butchers it to 16"?! - the horror! lol)
My favorite feature is the action is simply made from the barrel blank, the bolt handle is the locking point. This obviously is simple and looks elegant to me. The "Sears" and other store brands were mostly "Stevens" made guns in a similar fashion that I have examined. The seen were more High Standard or Marlin made and used a separate reliever, I think.
The Stevens and also Iver Johnson Model X also used the receiver in barrel manufacturing trick. Ditto many European makers.
My plans are to make it into a "Boys Rifle"
for the grandsons.

the Boys Rifle has nothing to do with gender. It was a huge
55 caliber British rifle originally called the Boyes Rifle if I am not mistaken. It was a huge 55 caliber sniper rifle used by the British. It would be interesting to see how Jim converts that rifle to that 55 caliber Boys Rifle.
