Reeder Custom Guns - A while back I bought a SW Performance 22 Victory

I went to our new steel range and fired about 300 rounds out of the pistol. I will be honest in that all I did in the past was run a Bore Snake through the barrel.

Today I noticed I had some failures of the bolt to go into full battery.

I figured that it was getting quite fouled so this evening I tried to run a Bore Snake through. Failed. It seemed something was blocking the bore.

So I took the gun down and conducted a thorough cleaning. I took a cleaning rod and it seemed that it did not want to go through. Wow. Something isn't right.

I peered down the barrel and it was incredibly fouled. I put the rod from the chamber end and slowly tapped it through.

I was very surprised at what happened next. I had a large shard of lead come out. It was about an 1/8 inch wide and almost a 1/2' long.

I have never seen a barrel so fouled as this. Now I did shoot some new Remington Lightnings which aren't the cleanest but in this day and age beggars can't be choosers.

I did run the rod through with a Hoppe's soaked patch. The next step is to let it sit overnight with a liberal amount of Hoppe's in the bore.

Another point is that the gun has a screw on compensator. That thing is clogged with lead. I did ream out some of the holes but it isn't perfect. I am soaking that in a bottle of Hoppe's and see what happens in a few days.

Just curious as to why the bore leaded so badly. I have a Ruger Mk4 Lite and shot as much out of it yet I do not have the same problem. I will add that I shot the Remington Lightning as well without issue.

Box it up and send it to S&W. They will probably give you a new barrel.

What barrel do you have? Carbon Fiber or Fluted.

I have the same gun, I have run just over 1000 rounds of CCI HV and SV with no problems. Your post made me go look,,, no leading.

When one of my friends owned a gun shop, over the years on multiple occasions, he brought me 22 handguns to clean that he couldn't. The barrels were so leaded that you couldn't see the rifling and a cleaning rod would not fit down the barrel... The common denominator was that each one of them had been shot with Remington Thunderbolt ammo. It usually took me a week or more to get all the lead out of those barrels. For whatever reason, soft lead or more probably really poor lube, Remington Thunderbolts lead like nothing else. I won't shoot the stuff even if someone gives it to me. I consider it junk. If you switch ammo, I think that you will find that your problem goes away...

dip 'em in Lee Liquid Alox and they work just fine.

Your idea of using liquid along is a good one and would probably cure the leading problem. I use it on all my cast bullets...

I have never seen anything like it before. I seem to recall in my youth shooting bricks of 22's each Saturday and none of my guns leaded up like that.

I will add that after closer inspection my Ruger Mk4 Lite was leaded up heavy but maybe not as much as the Smith and Wessson 22.

I did scrub both barrels multiple times with a bore brush and then JB Bore Paste. Now both are factory fresh.

I bought the Thunderbolts because they were the only things available. I'll buy another box and as Mr. Taylor pointed out , dip them in some lube .
