The bullet was designed to just slip into the cartridge and be seated by finger pressure. The larger diameter front band made it necessary to use a cartridge slightly shorter than normal, as the band on the bullet was against the cylinder throat. This acted like a crimp and kept the loads from "pooping" ... it allowed them to build normal pressure just the same as if it were crimped.

in .357 used a .38 Special case
in .38 special used a .38 Long Colt case
in .44 Magnum used .44 Special case
in .44 Special used .44 Russian case
in .45 Colt cases were trimmed .120" or so.
