Reeder Custom Guns - Ruger No. 1 bullet suggestions

I recently bought a Ruger No. 1 in 45-70. It was kind of a risky buy in that I had to decide on it sight-unseen. Long story short, a friend of a work associate passed away and had a lot of guns that the widow wanted to sell. So I rolled the dice and it paid off. Just under $900 and I only expected to get the rifle, but got a package deal - rifle, scope, sling, and case. The scope is a Bushnell 1.5-6x42 with an illuminated reticle. The rifle seems to be in very good shape overall. It looks like it was only fired a couple times.

So this is my first 45-70 (and first Ruger No1). Any bullet suggestions?

I used it in Canada around Slave Lake for bear where no handguns were allowed. I used it up on the Arctic circle above Quebec Labrador on a big double shovel Caribou.

only had the one. The bullet number was Hornady #4502. It worked so well in my 45-70 #1 that I never tried any other bullets. I also used it in a Bison hunt in Utah in my 450 GNR Contender handgun barrel.

I also used a different 450 GNR handgun with the same 350 grain bullet in a water buffalo hunt a year or two later. Same thing. It broke one shoulder and blew up both lungs and was found under the skin on the off side. That bullet just works..

in 445 Super mag. My first shot was with the 450 GNR and it broke the shoulder but the bull ran off into the heavy brush. We sneaked in and I spotted him waiting for us in the brush.

I took a quick picture and then hit him twice with the hot loaded 445. That put him down. He was already dead on his feet before the 445s hit him. I was using 300 grain JSPs in the 445.

They came out with the FP version not that long ago and used it for the Africa we went on. Which obviously it worked also.

405 grain bullet gas checked in .458 and .459 diameter. I have loaded both and when the range opens back up they are the first to get tested. I use the 45-70 for hunting in the Alabama woods and Georgia woods as well as brush country. They are effective stoppers in the commercial bullets that I have used at both the Wilderness Lodge on hogs and for deer as well with shots in the 50 to 60 yard range. Al have been one shot stops without much damage to the meat.
