Snake in the dog pen with Lucy!
Country dogs at least communicate with different barks. My family knows the difference. There is the motorcycle/lawn mower machine bark, cat fight bark, something in the barn causing a ruckus bark, and the less frequent turtle/snake bark! We got the latter today while I was some 17 minutes distant. Mom does not do snakes as well as she used to. Having babies changes them I think.

Just a snake in the grass...

When I got home they had the dog out (don’t want her bit). Mom, sis, Benj we’re all standing watch. A hoe, shovel, .410 revolver! Quick inspection with zoom on a camera confirmed round pupils. Sis ran for her snake book. Confirmed “Plain Bellied Water Snake”. It’s often confused with a Moccasin, and rightfully so. Everyone stood down, had a time getting it shoo’d from under the dog house. Finally he struck the hoe a couple times, let loose some funky stink and slithered out of the pen.
