The critters that are almost literally invisible, about the size of the pepper dot seed ticks but red so you can't see them as easily. They eat bore holes into your hide using an enzyme that basically liquefies your skin, which is painless and you don't notice it typically. After they vacate the holes are left in your hide. Your body responds to the injury of the enzymes by releasing histamines. That is what itches like the devil for 2-3 days, then degrades only to moderately intolerable levels for a week or so. Anti-histamines offer some minimal help.

Topical attempts to cover the air exposure to the feasting holes in your skin do give a bit of relief. But your body is going to have to heal those holes and that simply is going to itch.

A good dose of chiggers is a life changing experience. I read they don't bite below 60 deg. F nor above 99 deg. F. But that is of little comfort. Just DEET up before going into the woods.
