Reeder Custom Guns - Whack it!

This very old M500 has a split but repairable stock. But that does not inspire me too much. So I ordered a Hogue pistol grip and I’m about ready to whack the barrel off a little bit longer than minimal due to potential discrepancies in how some goober might measure. It’s hard to argue with a stupid person. What’s an extra inch or 3/4 anyway.

The front sight is nothing to worry over and I’ve even seen no gunsmithing clip/stick on fiber tube fronts. So that will be easy.

barrel length ideas to yourself. The legal shotgun barrel length is 18". So stop with the know it all BS on this forum. And any of you that read his post about 16" pay no attention to it.

For my own uses I'll probably measure from the front of the receiver. As you reminded, probably 18.6". The Hogue furniture looks really good and while things are still hard to find there are some out there.

Mine is a 20 ga., and since I'll likely be shooting mostly birdshot light loads, recoil is not much of an issue for me. I've shot many a pistol grip 12 ga. in the day. My favorite grips were the Pachmayr set they used to sell. (Vindicator?)Totally top notch.

125 gr. Speer JHP
20 gr. H110 ... that's a max load. I use Military Surplus powder .. WC820 ...
I chronograph ed this load from the little S&W at over 1300 fps.

its main virtue was it added a lot of weight to help a little in taming recoil. As an fyi, the Raptor grip is much better than the Vindicator, BUT, the 20ga may not need that help as you aver. If it turns out it does, you have a plan B anyhow.

They are fun to play with, and you might see if you can find another used long barrel to cut, so that you still have a good hunter to use.

The crack is easy to fix with wood glue and small hardwood dowel, just drill down to crack, pump in glue until it comes out the crack, leave the dowel in place and clamp, wipe excess, cut dowel flush when dry and oil the cut end. It will appear a domino dot. In any case, enjoy the toy, that is what they are for.

It’s worth fixing. I use Accraglass rather than wood glue and I can almost perfectly match color. Not that it really matters on this one. Doug’s M64 Winny is another matter...

as there just is not much demand for the long barrels, and likely can be found still and cheaply. Yes, noticed the old wood and even looked close to see if it old enough to have only the single action bar, but seems to have the twin bars. Acraglas is top drawer, only mentioned wood glue as if properly clamped plus the pinning, it is everywhere, cheap, and likely will last as long as the gun. I really like that old gun, ringed forend, the works.

I inherited a High Standard Flight King from an uncle who passed many years ago. The shotgun only held sentimental value and I had no use for a long barrel full choke 12 ga.

I shortened the barrel, installed a green fiber optic front sight and coated the entire gun with Brownell's Aluma-Hyde II.
