An H&R was my first pistol also.

My Dad gave it to me when I was about 13. I shot that gun a lot. Didn't have enough sense to keep it.

at the same time. He picked the 999 but a stainless Virginian dragoon in 44 mag tickled my fancy. Killed deer with it. And the rest as they say is history.
I guess I am the only pure bred honky that has

never owned a 999. My first pistol that I bought (prior to that I used my Dads Colt SAAs and a couple of little cheapies) was a 22 LR/Mag 9" High Standard. It had the normal SAA type round top, no sights.
I had an old gunsmith work on it (AKA butchered it) trying to mount a scope on it. The only scopes we had in those days were the Bushnell Phantom that sits on a rail. The gunsmith couldn't figure out a way to mount that rail to the top strap. He drilled holes everywhere but it would never stay tight on the gun. Finally I took the scope off and filled the holes with fill screws and sold it to some other dummy. In the next few months I bought one of the first Contenders that hit the market and never looked back.

When I was 10 through 14 or so (1971-1974'ish), one of my aunts lived way out in the middle of nowhere; with miles and miles of abode hills behind the house (all BLM land).
Whenever my cousins and I would go on our great adventures into the 'dobes, my aunt always gave me her 999 to carry (I was the oldest of the group) "just in case".
That was my first one also!
