Hello
I am thinking of ordering the BIG HORN Marlin in a 429 GNR.I have talked to Gary several times about the pressure limits on the Marlin 1894 and he assured me it is safe.I want to use 300 gr LFN hard cast and he said this bullet should feed fine.I also would like to get around 1900 fps with H-110 is that possible? I would appreciate hearing back from anyone who has experience with this setup and any information that you could provide.
Thanks,
Michael

I have a 16" barreled 1894SS in .429 GNR

I shoot the LEE 310 FNGC and garner right at 1900 fps with H110. I run out of capacity before pressures become an issue. A 240 gr. SWCGC runs 2150 fps in my gun. That's about factory .444 Marlin speed!

Doug has shot several things with the .429 GNR using Lee 310 gr. cast bullets. He used a 12" and 15" Encore barrel with brake. Velocities always ran from 1700-1800 fps and even in my 9.5" SRH (no mechanical mods other than re-chambering) I can get a solid 1550 fps from the 310 LEE. Seating out the bullet to the rear groove and adding another grain and a half of powder I kiss 1600 fps. In the revolver I lose some efficiency with lighter bullets, I think the H110 needs something to push against and those heavier bullets work great. The Jacketed 265 gr. Hornady is probably one of the best too.

I loaned my .429 Marlin to two newbies at HHC that had never touched it before, both loaded with the LEE bullet, one shot each, two dead hogs!

4227 and 1680 at full capacity make good "light" loads equaling most .44 Magnum factory rounds.

if my African lion hunt comes to pass in September

As a just in case I plan to modify two of my guns, the 429 GNR and the 510 Hunter in 510 GNR with 8" barrels to make them legal for South Africa then do a lot of shooting and see which one is the most accurate.

Then whichever is the most accurate I hope to take that one and a G-2 in 378 GNR. All this is in the planning stages and will depend on whether I can get out of here for 2 weeks. Also I have a couple of small health issues and I need to see how they do between now and then.

This is something I have wanted to do for years but kept putting it off. Now I need to get off my ass and do it. So we shall see.

Well I'm gonna send up prayets thar

You once had a "475 Classic" series

that I greatly admired. The pictured gun was a really pretty but purposeful 7-1/2" octagon, all matte Chromex, with a Bisley Gunfightered grip frame. I really admired it but never got around to that one. With an additional 1/2" of barrel and scope provisions that might be a S.A. player in any selected caliber.

*I know you like the Leupold DDT handgun mounting but have you ever explored a DDT "barrel" mounted set-up with positioning like the Ruger "Hunter" models? I know the rifle bases might be adapted.

I like the .475 Linebaugh too. I have shifted my attention to the .510 GNR but with the availability of .480 Ruger it is attractive for .475 option in the collection.

we still build it but not as much as some others

with me on that hunt. Two old goats on their "last African hunt". Although I said my Cape Buffalo hunt was going to be my last hunt and changed my mind on that one so I guess we should say "2 old goats on probably their last African hunt". There is another old grouch that I wouldn't mind tagging along with us and that is Alcorn Russell. Then we could say "3 old goats on probably their last African hunt". And as it is an African lion hunt if necessary we could use Alcorn for bait. I thought about talking Doug Faith into going but he is too young to meet the qualifications. Plus he wants to shoot a hippo. And only really warped people shoot hippos. But I would still enjoy his company.
