Reeder Custom Guns - The latest and greatest take two

Stopped at the LGS to see what they might have as I do my search for my GNR 429 and 41 GNR donor revolvers. Two young millenials were there extolling the virtues of the new hot 6.8 Western in their long range gun pursuits. So I asked where do you guys hunt? "Alabama". So what's your average shot distance? "100-150 yards". So why waste your money? I use a single shot pistol In 44 mag, 356 GNR or 41 GNR for those distances, why waste your money on such an expensive long gun and ammo? " Whaat?" I just left them there staring at one another wondering why I would be such a foolish old man I guess.

Here in the part of Oklahoma I live in the old 30-30 ruled deer hunting for years and years most shots are not more than a hundred yards but now everyone except the old guys that have sense think you need a .300 mag or .338 of some sort or better yet a 6.5 Creedmore to shoot these long distance shots on a hundred pound Whitetail. It's pretty silly really, they buy high dollar rifles and scopes for something an iron sighted Winchester or Marlin could handle. The old .243, .270 and '06 will do anything most people do. I do all my hunting with an old 1895 Marlin in .45-70 with a 2x Leupold scope, and it's a joy to carry and I know there's nothing out there that the old antique round can't handle especially within 100 yards.

Lever gun Gary reamed to 30 GNR. My old eyes need a little better rear sight, been hinking about trying a Marble's Bullseye on it. It is old and slightly battered so it makes a great knock around long gun and with 30 GNR it's more than adequate for an Alabama woods gun. However when hunting for meat I use my scoped G2's. These yahoos were talking about the 6.8 Western having the velocity and trajectory of the 6.5 Creedmoor but with heavier bullets yadeyadayada. I wish all these wannabe snipers would enlist and get some real world training. We wouldn't be finding so many wounded deer in the woods that died suffering.

They are running full pages in everything a gun guy might want to read. They are pushing the 6.8 Western as the finest round ever developed and one that will do anything and everything. They say the 6.8 Western will...
have more energy than the 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, and 7mm Mag (the 7 Mag I sorta doubt)
it has less recoil than the 300 WSM, 300 Win Mag and 300 PRC. (you'll notice they are bad mouthing their own 300 WSM)
It has heavier bullet weights than the 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC and 270 WSM..(oops, another slam on their own 270 WSM).
And long heavy bullets for big game hunting and long range precision shooting.
Plus is chambered in a short action for fast cycling, high accuracy and reduced rifle weight.(same thing they said about the WSM when it came out)
It comes with a 165 grain Accubond for 2970 fps muzzle velocity. So, if this bullet has and does all that it will make everything else obsolete.
They also say the rifles and ammo are available right now. (they must have got their vaccination shots and are smoking that free weed).
So if you believe in the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus and that Biden is going to take care of all of us, then this is your baby

The 6.8 Western is ballistically nothing more than a fast twist 270 Winchester in a short cartridge case. Bullet diameter and velocities are the same if used in the same length barrel. Sure you can use longer bullets with higher ballistic coefficients because of the faster twist, but that only comes into play if you are shooting 1000 yards or more. The shorter case means nothing to me as I've never felt that the extra 1/2" of bolt throw on a long action slowed me down at all.

When I work at our range, I'm amazed at these people who show up touting their 1000 yard wonder rifles, yet can't hit a 8" diameter target offhand at 100 yards. They seem to think that the great outdoors comes equipped with shooting benches everywhere and game animals always stand broadside and perfectly still for them while they set up all of their equipment to try to make a shot, and all the cross winds stop when they want to shoot.....

A pristine, early Ruger Model 77 Lightweight chambered in .308 with a Weaver 4X mounted. The first time he went out to shoot with his friends they told him the gun was too small and the scope needed to be a high-power variable. I told him to go back and tell them that particular combination will certainly handle, easily handle anything that walks in the lower 48 for sure. "Okay Papa" and that was the last we ever heard on the subject. There isn't much worth doing that cannot be handled with this combination. I gave two of my other grandsons Ruger American .270s similarly scoped and another grandson wanted to go a different route chose a lever action .44 Magnum. My son-in-law's rifle is a Ruger American .243 and it does everything he needs it to do.

I REMEMBER CRAWLING ACROSS HALF MILE WIDE FROZEN TURNIP FIELDS IN THE DEAD OF WINTER WITH A 22 TO GET A SHOT AT A CROW -- THATS HOW YOU DO IT !
PUNCHING PAPER AT 3-400 YARDS IS KINDA FUN FOR SURE THOUGH

100-150 yards is mean't for a 30-30...So much is wasted on the young!

What amuses me so much is how so many of these "great, new cartridges" are based on, or simply match performance of cartridges designed decades ago. I'm not knocking innovation or tinkering at all, but the younger generation (and less informed older generation) throw around how great the performance is out of this, that, or the other without even giving a nod to someone getting the same performance, maybe in a different platform, decades earlier.
