Alaska trip

Well lets get the bad news out of the way. I made a good shot with the 429GNR Encore on about a 7' black bear on the beach at about 90 yards. He reacted like he was hit, spun around, ran into the woods and disappeared before I could get a second shot off. We looked for him for almost 2 hours, no luck. It was late so back to the boat. 4 of us looked for about 2 hours the next morning but we still couldn't find him. The woods are very dense rainforest, difficult to move through. We checked the zero of my gun and it was fine. The guide said from my description of the shot, the way the bear reacted and the fact that my sights and shooting were good, he figures I hit the bear. He said if they can get 100 yds into the woods its almost impossible to find them. He also said if I'd used the 8mmGNR I might have anchored him better. So I was done hunting. I'd made another beach stalk on a bear too but it turned out to be a sow. We were either setup on grass flats or watching the beaches. We'd go out around 3:00 and stay out until 9:30-10:30. The rest of the trip was fantastic, light rain a few days, some sun, very calm winds. Saw whales breaching, seals, sea lions, river and sea otters, mink, porcupine, had a Dall porpoise zipping back and forth and jumping out of the water when we were out in the skiff. Saw about 30 black bears and 1 brown. The browns and blacks are separated on different islands in SE Alaska. We set crab traps and fished for halibut. Fresh Dungeness crab is fantastic.
