brought something to us that we try not to admit, that we are not invincible. We are all going to die. But this brings it closer to home. The fact that she agreed to DNR (do not resuscitate). Would I have the balls to do that? Give myself a death decree? I am not young anymore, at least my body says that but my mind refuses to admit that yes, I am going to die, maybe sooner than later. I know that, but if I had to give a DNR decision today, could I do it? This little lady is stronger than I could ever be. Maybe giving the DNR she knows she won't be in any pain anymore. Maybe she is just tired of all the surgeries and pain. Maybe she is just ready. Could I do that? Could I give up and cut the last string holding me to this life? I don't know. But it scares hell out of me to think I might have to do just that one day.

WE WERE INVINCIBLE? OR THOUGHT WE WERE. THE WORD NOW IS FRAGILE. ALL WE CAN DO IS BE READY AND KNOW GOD LOVES US. BOTH DIAMOND DOT AND I HAVE DNR ALREADY ARRANGED. THISI DO KNOW FOR SURE: THE THREE AMIGOS WILL GATHER TOGETHER SOMEDAY.

I have a DNR plus Medical Directives

all drawn up by a good friend who is a Shootist and a lawyer. It is all according to Texas State law.

Before Twyla had the stroke that took her, we had talked it over and we both decided to do a DNR. She never had the opportunity but in South Africa they did not need paperwork. They took the word of the patient and family.

After I got back to the States I carried through with it. I do not want to "live" sucking on an oxygen tube, lines running in and out of me, pissing myself and pooping in a diaper.

Besides, it is supposed to better over there.

THAT ARE JUST SOME OF MY THOUGHTS. EVERYONE HAS TO MAKE THE DECISION FOR THEMSELVES. I AM NOT TRYING TO CONVINCE ANYONE.

Yes, agreed. I'm on the fence.

It's a personal decision and many factors come into play. You hear about folks that were a gonner, then they fully recover miraculously. More times that is circumstances such as a freak accident, much different than progressive terminal illness. I think the specific situation must come into play.

No one would savor a lingering existence and being a burden on loved ones. But were myself in such a state it might be best left to a loved one to make the decision, not for my benefit but those who wanted to make peace for themselves. Having a living will with a designated person might be a fair option. But only if you had someone that could handle that sobering decision on your behalf and knew it ahead of time. I'm an organ doner too. if there is any salvageable parts that could benefit a soul through modern science when I'm done it's the least I could do.

I have to add that as a poor example of a Christian I at least have a left behind spiritual gift from God the Creator. That is Hope. It's a personal decision no one can make for you. A choice to accept Jesus Christ as a mediator, your sacrificial savior, that allows spiritual life and eternal assurance in glory. A lesson described us as born physically into life with a "dead" spirit due to sin. It takes acceptance of Christ, which fosters the indwelling of the holy spirit, to make that "spirit" born again. That is all that is required for a heavenly eternal existence. No specific denomination or heritage, good acts, sprinkled with water or dipped, no physical requirements. It's a spiritual thing, a personal choice, a committed decision, and its completely free. However, to reject it, after having this knowledge of condition, is said to align one for a "second" death of a condemned spirit and eternal separation. You exist eternally either way, it just depends on which side of the river you will do it.

Not trying to influence anyone just explaining if anyone is curious why some folks are optimistic facing death. No one wants to leave the physical body, that is not natural, but when the situation is forced I'm looking forward to the next level. Resuscitation attempts will not be my concern. All physical life is temporal.

God bless Allison, and may God comfort her and all of Charlie's family, during this time of transition. I cannot imagine how difficult it must be to endure.

the Medical Directive includes a DNR, Medical Power of Attorney which you designate those you trust to make the choices you have expressed, Durable Power of Attorney giving those you trust ability to take care of bills, etc, HIPPA Release so the Doctors can give them all the medical stuff they have about you, and a Directive to Physicians expressing your desires about end of life.

Amen WB!

In May. I feel like Jim, life isn't life on tubes wearing a diaper. I spent the first year of my life getting out of one.

Three things to remember when you get older: never pass up a bathroom, never waste a hard-on, and never trust a fart. "The bucket list."

as as an emr- it is only for those who have nothing left-- no hope- it is better to do it now than stick on your loved ones later... It does not mean something will happen to day.

Aortic and mitral valves replaced, aneurysm repair and one bypass I had several major complications and was so low sick and feeling so bad I had reconciled myself to the fact that I might not make it. Made peace with the Lord and possibility of passing back then. Of course I was so low sick in such pain and discomfort that actually helped me make the decision easier at the time. Had to spend an additional day on the ventilator and it was a terrible experience. I am not sure that I would want to live on one for an extended kength of time. All that being said, I don't know if it would be that easy of a decision to make today now that I am almost back to feeling well and normal. I worked in ICU as an advanced practice RN for years. I saw many patients come in as DNRs who begged for all possible measures to be taken in order to maintain life. We just need to make our peace with the Lord daily because we never know when our earthly end shall come, we just know it will. Allison gas showed much greater fortitude than I could have in similar circumstances.
