need to pray for the Herf family. I decided to brew some real coffee.....strong, black, and hot, and sit out on the deck to watch the sun rise up over the fields and woods. As I was sitting there enjoying the beautiful sunrise, the gentle and cool southern PA breeze, as well as the sights, sounds, and smells of the farm, I prayed that God would ease the burden and bring comfort to the Herf family as they go through something that every parent hopes they never endure. I also thought about how amazing Gary and the Misfit family is. We’re a bunch of folks who have been brought together by our common love of handguns, hunting, and all things related to shooting. Those things brought us together but this forum and the HHC have helped us become friends and hunting companions. I met Charlie at the HHC along with several of you and we had a great time of fellowship.
It’s challenging to put it into words how you can meet a group of people for the first time yet feel as though they are close friends you have known your entire life.....but that is how it feels when there is a gathering of Misfits. I remember a group of us standing around and swapping stories one night and one of the people who really leaves an impression is Charlie. As he laughed at the things Kase, Gary, a few others, and I were joking about, I was thinking about how happy and genuine Charlie was....he just has a personality that sticks with you. The Misfits are a family.....a collection of friends brought together by a common bond. We care about each other beyond our hunting and shooting experiences and that separates us from many other groups. You can’t count the number of times we have lifted each other up in prayer, donated items or raised funds to help out one of our friends in need.....or just simply offer a few words of encouragement.
As I finished my coffee and went back in the house to pour another, I felt a little peace and comfort because I know that my friend Charlie Herf has a strong group of friends to lean on as the burden weighs on him. Friends are the family that you choose and today as I pray for a friend I only met in person once, I’m also grateful for this family of Misfits. We’re a blessed family.
