Do any of you have any experience with HSM ammo? They offer a "Bear Load" for several calibers. Hard cast. Looking at the 325 gr. load for the .454 Casull, any input would be appreciated.

they should be fine. But if you are just wanting standard factory ammo for deer or such then save your money. The 454 is a hot load in standard factory loading. I see no reason to go to a +P or heavier load for just weekend shooting. My humble opinion.

I have seen them fail in Africa. I had poor preformance on an Elk.

What are your thoughts on the relatively new monolithic, or solid brass bullets vs. hard cast?

guys come in the shop with tales of hitting elk with these bullets and the animal running off and not finding them. They have never been truly proven to be as effective on animals like elk as a lead core bullet. If you hit a shoulder bone they seem to work OK but a hit anywhere else is a big if. I will not use a Barnes bullet or any other solid brass bullet.

sometimes I call them copper. I think they are a mixture of the two but of that I am not sure.

Both solids and HP’s. I have found this, and heard from others, they loose power, as I believe the gases goes around the projectile. I’ve shot some into a bullet trap, and the rifling grooves are barely evident compared to jacketed soft point bullets. One gentleman said they feel like a lighter load.
Just what I have found. Performance wasn’t great either. The copper HP’s came apart easily, brass ( rifle only) did not open at standard speeds. I will say the solid copper (410 grains in 454) were really accurate.
I like 300 sierras for tough animals. Used on moose, bison, hogs and bears. Then the Swift HP’s if you want them to open up but stay strong. Just my .02c worth.

cases, not be really accurate. Being solid brass the rear of the bullet does not obturate into the rifling and the gases flow around the bullet, that effects the accuracy big time.
