BUT THEIR SERVICE IS UNBELIEVABLE. ON MONDAY I ORDERED SHEEP TALLOW, BEESWAX, SMALL TINS WITH LIDS (all for making black powder lube) AND A BRASS/STEEL/PLASTIC PUNCH SET. THEY NOT ONLY SHOWED UP TODAY BUT AN E-MAIL ANNOUNCED THEIR ARRIVAL WITH A PICTURE OF THE PACKAGES AT MY FRONT DOOR.

I started using plain old lard

From the grocery store. I got the idea from a tube of Hodgdons black powder lube that had cracked from age. While putting the remainder of the tube into another container, i noticed that it smelled like lard. Further investigation showed other similarities.
My use has been mainly covering my balls, after loading a cap and ball revolver, lubing the center cylinder pin, and lightly lubing the barrel.
It isn’t as hard a lube as what you are making, and isn’t as soft as Crisco, nor does it melt like Crisco. It does “blow out” of the chamber on either side of the chamber being fired, but not all of the chambers on the first shot like Crisco. Also, the lard has not liquified and run out into my holsters in 100*+ weather here in southern New Mexico. Might help you “in a pinch” if you haven’t already tried it

I'VE USED CRISCO GOING BACK TO

1956 ALSO BORE BUTTER.DECIDED TO MAKE MY OWN WHICH WILL HARDER THAN LARD. LARD BRINGS BACK PAINFUL MEMORIES. I WAS ABOUT FIVE WITH A DOG. WE WENT AWAY FOR AWHILE AND THE DOG GOT THE ICE BOX OPEN AND ATE A GALLON OF LARD AND THEN THREW IT UP ALL OVER THE HOUSE. THE DOG DISAPPEARED AND I NEVER SAW HIM AGAIN.
