I started using plain old lard

From the grocery store. I got the idea from a tube of Hodgdons black powder lube that had cracked from age. While putting the remainder of the tube into another container, i noticed that it smelled like lard. Further investigation showed other similarities.
My use has been mainly covering my balls, after loading a cap and ball revolver, lubing the center cylinder pin, and lightly lubing the barrel.
It isn’t as hard a lube as what you are making, and isn’t as soft as Crisco, nor does it melt like Crisco. It does “blow out” of the chamber on either side of the chamber being fired, but not all of the chambers on the first shot like Crisco. Also, the lard has not liquified and run out into my holsters in 100*+ weather here in southern New Mexico. Might help you “in a pinch” if you haven’t already tried it
