Ever wonder what would happen if a shotgun shell was ignited?

it is very well made and neat. I have not shot it yet. In a flaregun the ammunition casing takes the brunt of the pressure, not the gun. That's why the can make them flimsy. You are not supposed to be able to insert a 12 ga. round into a unmodified 12 ga. flare pistol. To my knowledge anyway. The 26.5mm 12 ga. flare adapter will not accept a normal 12 bore round.
I had a mind to look into reloading 26.5mm flares and getting some adapters. They have them in .45/.410, .38 Special, .22 LR, and 12 ga. flare. Also they make reloadable cases special for #209 shotgun primers.
Lots of room for fun.

My Dad brought it back from WWII.
I've tried a 10 gauge shotgun shell in it and it does fit. Since I don't want to damage the flare pistol or hurt myself I've never fired that shotgun shell in it....
The pistol appears to have been made from cast metal...
Yeah the ctg. adapters make lots of sense

if you want to casually fire them. The .45/.410 sounds like the best for a first try. If you were handy with a lathe you could make a "Ctg. adapter" from a barrel blank and chamber it to what you needed.
The adapter may contain pressure around shell, BUT,

you still have that pressure operating rearward as well, against the standing breach, and should not be suprised if cracks develop at base or on breach face, if not designed for that much pressure.

gun and possibly the user. If a person had to use it with live ammo the adaptor needs to be good hardened steel and in a low pressure cartridge like 45 ACP or some such.
While Flare guns are not designed for breach pressures

they are designed around backthrust. There are lots of different types too. Plastic, aluminum, brass frames, even using adapters you have to use your head and not be an idiot. My Polish is very well made from steel and quite strong, even the locking system. That's why I chose it.
The adapters are made from aluminum mostly. I noted the .22 is plastic. Both have steel liners. I'd much prefer solid steel and intend to make a couple for myself from barrel blank stubs. Certainly only low pressure rounds should be used only after considering the construction of the piece itself.
My rig has a carry pouch with extra cartridge places. I hope to fill it with a mix of flares and adapters for a very interesting conversation piece and fun occasional shooter. I may even make some parachute rounds with little green army men.

A buddy of mine travels the Caribbean on his sailboat. He was telling me that it is illegal to have a firearm in many of the ports he goes to. However he can have a flare pistol.
He keeps the 45/410 adapter close at hand in case of pirates.
