I am using the gas check step as the heel. The largest diameter you can use is best. Heel bullets are hard to hold without case tension on the bullet body. Priming alone can blow the bullet out of a 6" barrel. I think they work best in a rifle that has a short leade so that the bullet is against the rifling to start with ... or very close to it.
Bullet diameter is not as critical as sometimes it is made out, depending on the application.
