I have a chance at one in really nice condition for $850. If it was a Colt I would have already bought it. Is this a fair price for one and do these make good shooters?

Chapter 18 of John Taffin's Book of the .44 Caliber. He seems to like them which is good enough for me.
Check it over well. They even sold kits

To build one yourself. They sport frame mounted firing pins, special hammers, and some special threaded screws so they loosen less. Other parts interchange with Colt SAA second Gen guns. In fact the factory used some Colt parts early on.
It's hard to know what's "fair" in today's market

That said, I had the opportunity to get a GW 5-1/2" .357 Atomic in nice shape a few months back for 7 Bens and jumped on it. You don't see 'em every day. I still haven't shot it -- might turn out to be a complete dog!

It's specifically about the Atomic but has good background on GW generally as well.

if it's something I want or need. Unless it is outright robbery. But paying a little more for something I want is not a big deal and I refuse to worry about it.
