some magic benchmark. I'm certain some FBI lab had a pile of data amassed to validate that level of penetration.

Cast shooters figured it out real quick that if you had a flat tip the bullet seemed to punch a hole ahead of it and penetrate straighter and deeper. By golly it flat works. In contrast a RN will often wander, and a bunch if it hits anything while penetrating. A pointed bullet is even worse and can sometimes reverse course! Mostly it tends to tumble and stop very prematurely. The FN solid may not kill immediately, depending on the bullet placement, but it's reassuring that it will truly penetrate straight and very deep if not reliably exit leaving a good blood trail.

I'd not fancy using a .22 for defense but you could do worse. The hit probability is way up there comparing some others, at least. The old hit with a .22 is better than a miss with a .45 thing. Gary's simple tool provides a easy, economical method to turn any old .22 rounds into more effective flat tip versions. It really makes a difference. Works fantastic on game too without tearing up as much meat as a HP but the hit is notably more defined and telling than the original RN.

*That Original Punch metal bullet is serious business, I don't think it could be surpassed in intended performance by much of anything.
