We had estimated the distance closer to a half mile but who knows. My buddy had an old clapped out Remington 550 and I had a bit newer 552 Speedmaster. Atop a rock dam we were firing at a large rock in a shale pit in the distance. It was basically an island so the misses were easily seen. What was humorous was the "hang time" how long it took the bullets to get there. It actually was several seconds delay, and a second is a long time!
My perfected hold was holding the stock under my armpit and at a high angle using the front sight. I had walked it into the rock and as long as I kept my gun hold I could hit that car sized rock every time! I do not recall any wind, it was hot summertime. We walked on down some 45 minutes to get to the shale pit and as we made around the corner we saw an entire family who had been swimming in the pit for some time! No doubt while we shot about 200 rounds total into that water and area! We thought we were the only people within miles! Scared the crap out of us, they had little kids and all. Go the heck out of there! It still gives me the shivers, some 45 yrs. later.
Thx for posting Jim, quite interesting!
