but not many. I've had the leather soles of dress shoes look like green velvet from sitting in the closet unused for too long. Anyway, I've tried all kinds of "name brand" products, nothing has kept rust at bay like a plain old ATF/Lanolin mix.
Heat the ATF (automatic transmission fluid) in a double boiler type arrangement (I pour it into a small jar in a small saucepan of water) and then start dumping dabs of anhydrous lanolin into, about a pea sized bit at a time, while stirring. A table spoon of lanolin to a couple ounces of ATF is a good mix, but you can make it thicker if you like.
The ATF keeps rust at bay, the lanolin helps it stick to steel. It's VERY good on a parkerized finish, but works great on bare blued steel as well. Prior to using this I had all kinds of rust problems. Haven't had issues in years - as long as I remember to wipe my guns down prior to putting them away.
A few drops on a flannel cloth in a baggie is something I keep in my range bag. Wipe 'em down, put 'em away. Misplaced the baggie a couple weeks ago and got busy when I got home - rust had started to form where hands had rubbed off the protection. Not bad, but enough to remind me to make sure and have one of those cloths in my bag every trip.
As for carry guns, my Llama Cassidy gets wiped down and stuck into my Simply Rugged IWB holster. Both have held up to 15 years or so of constant use. To get that rust on the cylinder under control, use a bit of that ATF/Lanolin mix and some fine steel wool. Some would use a COPPER penny instead, but here in Coffee Country such coins are rare.
