I examined a very nice old rifle today.

It was a Remington No.1 in .50 Cal. The serial was in the 3800 range putting it in the mid-range of production from 1868-1888. The last patent date was 1874 so that narrows it a bit. I THINK it was a .50-70 but the only marking was ".50" and it looked like a straight wall case (tapered). The wood was dark but no cracks at all and it had the most astonishing bore I have ever seen on a BP era gun.

The $3k was a bit much for me at this time but I truly did appreciate the nice gun. It was lively in hand and belied the heft. The 1/2" bore no doubt contributed to this fact. A genuine Buffalo gun!
