Reeder Custom Guns - Shooting the 1862 Police Model

I first loaded it with light loads of Pyrodex P and of course it shot high. I mean, with the little bitty bead on the on the barrel I figured it would.

Shooting full power loads with Pyrodex P and with 3Fg Black Powder, it still shot high as I figured it would.

I took a small jeweler's file and cut the rear sight notch in the hammer deeper.

I drop the bead to the bottom of the notch and hold 6 o'clock on the 8" 15 yard gong and it's "ON" every shot.

I need to put it on paper to see exactly where it's hitting but it's a lot closer now. I figure to get it on at 50 feet I am going to have to cut it some deeper.

Since it's a pocket gun I figured about 25 ft. was a good regulation goal. I've not put it on paper either. Not sure I even scared the 20 yd. gong. But it was made more for just outside of knife range for it's day. The .31 ball is lots more formidable than the .22! I plan on testing that some.

It is functioning well, the caps stayed on the nipples but were split for easy removal. No jams and only one fail to shoot after I noted I did not fully seat the cap on a nipple, robbing it of proper ignition. The second cap lit off fine. That was in three or four cylinder loads. This C&B would relate to a more modern .32 pocket revolver.

That .36 Police relates to the modern .38 Special 3-4" Police gun of mid-last century. We both know a well armed fellow would need AT LEAST a brace of them. A BIG knife is not a bad addition either.

to my eyes, it doesn't go with your pistol. Good excuse for knife shopping! :o)

1) it was cheap
2) it is very strong with a full-length tang
3) the handle will not hold fingerprints
4) it's cheap enough you can leave it in a bad guy's chest and just go buy another

I think I have that quote correct. One of my favorites.

For those that don't know, I was giving a Mozambican pastor a ride home. In my truck I had a knife in a scabbard fasten just below the 4WD shift lever.

SHOT NIPPLES ARRIVING NEXT WEEK. I HAVE SEVERAL REAR SIGHTS TO OPEN BUT IT WILL PROBABLY BE SPRING BEFORE I SHOOT THESE AND ABOUT 12 OTHERS. WORKING ON THE SINGLE ACTION SIXGUNS BOOK NOW.UP TO CHAPTER 32 DONE. I WILL GO 57 CHAPTERS AND THEN BRIAN PEARCE TAKES OVER FOR 20 MORE.

I recently acquired a Uberti .36 police - my first B/P handgun. An acquaintance had bought for $10 at a tag sale some years ago and had no clue it was charged and capped. Thank god no one played with it. I relieved him of it for $20. At the range it shot about 2 feet high at 15 yards but I didn’t have Pyrodex P. I just got a can of it and will try again. I will definitely try this suggestion after I get the load down. Thanks !

Thanks Jim. That’s the eighth and largest knife I have made. Took adult Ed class for knife making in 2012 at our high school taught by a nationally known custom knife maker. I kept taking the class as I enjoyed it so much. Made one for my nephew for college graduation (photo) and have gifted two others. Sheath for this one is almost finished except for dye and polish - Cordovan this time. We start with a blank of 01 tool steel cut by the instructor. Blades are all hand wet sanded both before and after heat treating down to 600. Creates quite the edge.
