have never heard the shots. I normally will hear the bullet hit the animal but never the shots. Way back in the late 70s and early 80s when I was shooting in the combat games I never heard the shots. Back then I probably should have worn ear protection but it really wasn't available back then other than putting cotton balls in your ears. Even now when I shoot in our combat matches I don't normally wear muffs but that is with a 45 1911 and to me that is just a dull boom.

I don't know why but in a stressful situation I never hear the shot, even with a short AR-15. On the last African hunt when I jumped down off the Land Cruiser and walked up on the wounded lion I could hear John, our PH, a few yards behind me telling me to go slow that the lion was still alive and John was talking in a low voice. I could hear him but when I fired the last couple of shots into the lion to keep him down, I never heard them.
I don't know why but it just is.
