The light should be held in the weak hand.
When an intruder is discovered, the light is thrown violently upon them.
This lights them up in the dark and makes it much easier to get a good sight picture.
That is an interesting prospect as the light

does not project very far at all. I have seen some special lanterns with focus reflectors attached to project it about twice as far. A friend collects carbide lamps but I have little experience. I DO remember as a boy the best light available used this heavy rectangle 6V battery that was heavy and not very efficient. But it was impressive back in the day. Any light at all that was portable was a luxury. I often walked miles to my friends house down the gravel road with no light at all. No telling how many Copperheads I literally stepped right over.
They sure would see you coming with a lantern, you'd be easy pickings for an ambush.
