once it gets loose and slapping around under recoil you will start to break things. Tons of Browning and Remington semi-auto shotguns have split forends simply because the retaining nut got loose and it was repeatedly fired. A buttstock will split too. Savage made a semi that was notorious for it, the 720, I dare you to find one without at least a hairline crack in the stock. The long recoil Browning action kicked like a beast. Ditto the savage 99.
