I worked in a SS/Titanium steel production plant that produced dozens of different types of stainless steels for many applications. The stronger steels required for gun making, sports equipment, etc. are exposed to the elements and will rust. Iron gives strength, Chromium acts as the stainless or low/no rust at the sacrifice of strength.
