Reeder Custom Guns - Speaking of RDs on pistols these days…

Gary made the comment in the CSX thread below about red dots on your carry pistol. I just can’t seem to get into that idea as it’s battery powered (so it can fail) and it’s bulky, to say the least. I just prefer sights….and even as I get older and my “up close” vision requires readers, for self defense we’re talking bad-breath distances anyway, are we not? So why hang the sight on the slide and off the sides? I just don’t understand. We’re not trying to knock the gonads off a housefly at 30 yards with your CCW, you’re just getting out of a situation that’s gotten really bad, really fast.

Is my thinking way off on this topic?

My CCW guns are currently all open sights. I have a reflex mounted on two of my ARs, one is mounted on top of the scope, the other is in a “cowitness” position so all I have to do is flip up the rear sight if it goes out. I am shopping for a spare slide to go on my Glock 20 10mm that I can mount a FFII on to play with. I’m thinking if you are up close and personal it will be a snap point and shoot situation anyway. . At 10 paces I’m thinking if the battery goes out you still have a sight window of sorts through the reflex glass that’ll get you center mass with some practice. Will try some shots with the battery off to see where they hit when I get it rigged.

Sure, on an AR it makes sense as you will engage at longer than 7 yards or so, but self-defense/bear bad breath ranges? No thanks. Point and squeeze. No time to make a sight picture.

is if the battery goes bad and you haven't noticed it then you pull your pistol up with a bad guy at kissing distance now there is no red dot visible and you waste a couple of seconds (which you may not have) trying to find that damn dot. You get used to the red dot being there and you have lost your ability to use the open sights. You have depended upon that red dot as always being there, that now what do you do, other than twist the gun around trying to find the dot and find yourself instead with a bloody red spot on your chest that is not from a red dot sight. And I have a hard time calling a red dot a rmr.

I have is the lens is usually covered with a layer of dust. Could be an issue if you don't clean it regularly. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to keep it.

I was thinking the same about the rmr. Agreed with all my ccw iron, mine are night sights. I've shot a few rmr at meets over the years, interesting stuff, but on a ccw piece not sure about it. Gen 3 glock 20 in 10mm, getting a long slide, (ala g-40), and extended threaded barrel, putting a comp on it. For playtime and light hunting. Opinion only and mine doesn't count
