Last night on Gun Stories on the Outdoor channel they had a show about the .44 Automag, it was pretty good.
I had one a short while and enjoyed playing with it

I was horrified I was going to break something or crack the frame etc. We dropped the "bolt accelerator" in some tall grass. Maybe that was the beginning of my anxiety. Back in 1975 or so it was the coolest of the cool and cost almost $500! Crazy high. You could buy a used truck for $500 back then and drive it to work for years!
They were really innovative for the day and work surprisingly well. Accuracy is truly the rival of a modern bolt action rifle if the shooter is up to it. To be as successful as it was and chambered for basically roll your own rounds is a testament to the men at the front of the game back then. Some of my heroes, warts and all.
It was a pleasure to give it a whirl.

my longest open sight shots were made with the 44 Auto Mag, both on exotic sheep and both at around 200 yards open sights. And thank goodness I have video of those shots. The gun is extremely accurate, and despite what some gun writers said back then the gun was extremely reliable if you loaded the ammo right. Plus shooting thousands of rounds a year with my guns I never had even one part to break or fail me. I have taken critters as small as a whole herd of skunks up to bull Bison and used them in Africa on several of my hunts there. If I was a bit younger and had better eyes I would buy one of the new model Auto Mags that are hopefully coming out soon.
My favorite was the 41 Auto Mag, which was simply the 44 Auto Mag necked down to 41 caliber. Extremely accurate and reliable.

I've always wanted one myself, they are so cool looking. On that show last night one guy was saying they shot better than the people could hold them. I had a Wildey in .45 Win Mag for a few years but never even shot it because I heard they were fragile and at the time parts were hard to get because he had went out of business so many times.
