Reeder Custom Guns - Casting Mold Arrived

I located a cast iron pot & ladle. Not sure if it is a bean pot, or a plumber's pot. It appears that the pot was placed on top of a wood burning stove & repeatedly filled with water. The interior is covered with rust & possibly calcium/minerals. Do I need to remove this before smelting lead, or can I melt the lead & rely upon the flux process?

I currently have 16# of diving weights from the 1960's.

Anyone familiar with the quality or how hard that type of lead might be?

When I cast 475’s and 510’s you only get 14 to 20 bullets per pound. Keep trying to source lead. Put the diving weight lead on an anvil and smack the edge with a hammer, look for cracking. Ideally you want it hard enough to not melt in the bore, but not so hard it cracks. After casting, do the same smash test with a hammer, or put a bullet in a vice and see how it holds together when crushed to half its cast length.

I figured it wasn't much weight & I need to locate much more. Just what I have on hand at this time.

To clean the rust & hard water, fill it up with vinegar and let it soak over night, it will be clean as a whistle in the morning.

It's a Piqua Ware pot. Haven't found the size number yet. It looks like it might clean up & be a nice pot.
