hunting book may well have put the spark in me. His 22 caliber S&W that was a cut down 22 Hornet (to fit in the cylinder), and then later on Lee Jurras' 41 JMP (Jurras Magnum Pistol) in the Auto Mag. I used the 41 Auto Mag everywhere and took more critters with it than should be allowed.
Being the 41 Auto Mag was just a 44 Auto Mag case necked to 41 I got to thinking about a 44 Magnum necked to 41 and asked Lee if anyone had done that. He said, "no, it is too simple. Every wildcatter wants to do something like necking down a 9mm Kropotchnick to 5mm or something like that. The cartridge you are asking about is too simple". So that gave me the reason to do it. That was the 41 GNR, my first wildcat cartridge. I immediately ruined the collector value is a S&W model 57 by rechambering it to the 41 GNR and have used it ever since. The success of that cartridge spurred me on to try other things and today there are almost 70 different wildcat cartridges in our new 3rd edition reloading manual.
