Ruger Five Seven?

Good morning:

I did some trout fishing this AM without any luck. As I was flagellating the water I was thinking about a good " field " pistol.

I have handled but never shot the Ruger Five Seven. I am wondering how well would it serve the needs of someone out in the wilds?

I know ammunition is very expensive but notwithstanding it seems to have some good reviews.

My concern would be how well would it perform in the category of self-defense? I have read some good and bad about the 5.7 round for that particular purpose.

What are your opinions? I would appreciate any kind of input. Thank you

"out in the wilds"? Not sure which "wilds" but ...

most places I've been I would not bet my life on a .22 .. no matter how large the cartridge behind it may be.

The 5.7 Ruger is very light weight

Low recoil, and has a 20 round capacity. The performance on jackrabbits is about the same as a 22magnum, which is about the same as a 9mm. The 5.7 shoots flatter. (The younger people take “flatter” to mean not push the barrel up during recoil, my meaning is in “trajectory”.)

5.7 may be just the ticket for a hip holster...

How about a plain jain semi auto in 9, 40, 45 or 10mm?

I'm kinda looking myself, been sorta looking for an oddball 357 sig, or 45 gap. Biggest thing around here would be an occasional black bear, wild hog, coyote, deer or a fat man lol.
If the big browns were on the list, that semi auto would have to ride last resort, main carry would be a 454 or 475 Lb , 510 gnr etc.

That's a big bear! Would not want to have

same price and be a better gun for "in the wilds". The 5-7 is a great gun but I wouldn't go for it for self defense.
