Reeder Custom Guns - Looking at getting a compact 1911,

I like the Kimber Ultra Carry. I have a Ruger SR1911 Commander in .45 so I already have ammo. Which would you prefer, .45 or 9MM. I ma leaning towards another .45, never had a 9 so I am still a bit undecided.

Cone barrels with no bushing or link (some). I'm sure they work. It's just not a 1911 to me anymore. I always wanted to try one of those teeny Para's with that LDA trigger. But I never did.

The 9 is now days basically a .38+P auto and very smooth shooting. But the .45 just seems to work, no matter the actual cartridge or platform. I carry a Kahr PM.45 for the most part. You need to try them to be certain but it uses most 1911 mags too. It's tiny, and demanding of the shooter to hold, but recoil is not bad at all. MUCH less than a comparable model in .40 S&W, that was pure nasty!

slide release .. magazine release ... trigger.

I used to tease the SIG shooters about getting excited in a gunfight, hitting the wrong lever and have their slide jump off the gun.

on the market. In my opinion much better quality and reliability than a Kimber or any of the high dollar 1911s. The second best, again in my humble opinion, is the Rock Island 1911s. For several years we used the Rock Island frames for our custom 1911s because they were perfect. We still have several RIA frames here that we will be using as we go along. We bought out the Safari Arms and Olympic Arms 1911s so we have enough 1911 parts to last a lifetime. The only problem is we are so far behind we don't have the extra time to build our own custom 1911s. Hopefully soon.

looking for a lighter weight 1911, the Ruger is all steel, tends to get heavy during the day. Even an all steel officer's model would be somewhat lighter.

I have been very happy with the last two 1911s I bought. 1 a full size Rock Island ....and 2. A Springfield range officer.

I've ran many rounds through them and consider myself fortunate to have had no issues

I like it, but it’s a little heavy. Ken Hackathorn and Bill Wilson recommend using l200grain or lighter projectiles with the short barrels. I’ve used 215 grain semiwadcutters without problems, but did have issues with 250 grain Underwood ammo and one brand of 230 grain fmj…but i don’t remember which brand.
Just thought i’d throw that in there.

in .45 ACP. The profile was about like the old Speer 200 gr. flying ashtray. lol Being cast I could push it easily as fast or a little better than a the 230 gr. FMJ ball. It was a real hammer in the Govt. model.

Not very scientific but I used to gauge energy transfer by shooting split Oak firewood stood on it's end. The visual of the impact and how or if it knocked it over. Some .44's shot straight through and would not knock them over. It seemed the .45 255 FN and a .357 JHP had about the same impact response! Any hit above midline, it would really smack it over.

commander or like size 45. The Ruger and my PD are both about the same weight and no problem carrying all day.

[image] Check out the EAA Girsan MC1911SC it's an officer size with aluminum frame. I bought one in .45, it shoots well and haven't had any issues yet, but have only put a couple hundred rounds through it. I also traded into a new Springfield Armory Ronin EMP in 9mm, it has a 3 inch barrel and it too shoots well but have only put couple hundred rounds through it also, downside on the EMP is that due to slimming down the grip frame, it uses "special" magazines only available from SA, but the are made by MecGar
