handgun for Kase and I. We both had the 10" barrel and that if fine as that is the barrel length Milek and Steve Herrett developed the cartridge for. It uses pistol powder so a longer barrel is not necessary for perfect ballistics. We both took quite a few animals with it from small key deer size animals to larger full bodied whitetail deer. We mostly used the Sierra 125 grain bullet and it did the job for us.
I was so impressed by the ballistics of the 30 Herrett that I designed the 300 GNR as a revolver cylinder length cartridge like the 30 Herrett. The 30 Herrett had a long neck, so I cut that down a tenth of an inch and moved the shoulder forward so it has the same case capacity as the old 30 Herrett but I now have 6 rounds. And even in a revolver length barrel it gives me almost 2200 fps. It is based on the cut down 30-30 case just as the 30 Herrett is. It turned into an exceptional cartridge for deer size game and one of our most popular cartridges today.
