Shooting a 250 gr lead conical bullet at about 1200 FPS out of a .50 caliber Ruger Old Army, what would be the largest animal you would consider using it on inside 50 yards?

Since it requires pure lead, penetration can be limited

on something though (like hogs) or heavy bone animals. Bullet placement is more critical. Some exotics might be fine, things smaller than Elk. It depends a lot on the shooter. My hot loaded ROA .45 with 777 ran a 270 gr. at 900 fps. It barely had enough for medium sized hogs. Penetration through the shoulder plate is rough, you have to get past that for the vitals. Deer type critters are fine, sheep etc.
